Naxos: rope broke on Blue Star 1

Rupture of the right stern rope of the passenger-vehicle carrier Blue Star 1 occurred in the early morning of Saturday, August 15, 2026, during docking at the central pier of Naxos. According to a statement from the Hellenic Coast Guard, the vessel came from Thira and Ios and was headed to Paros and Piraeus. The incident occurred before the loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles began, a fact that significantly limited the risk, as the area around the dock ramp was still clear. No injuries to passengers, crew members, or dock workers were reported. The statement does not specify the number of passengers the vessel was carrying at that moment.

The rope was replaced immediately and the ship completed its regular stop normally, subsequently departing for the next ports of the route. The incident was reported to the Harbor Authority of Naxos, which initiated the relevant investigation procedure. Rope rupture during mooring is not a rare occurrence in Cycladic ports, however it is considered one of the most dangerous incidents for personnel: a rope that breaks under tension is ejected at high speed and has caused serious injuries to dock workers and crews at other ports in the country. For this reason, safety procedures provide that the area around the moorings remains clear during docking operations and that deck personnel wear the prescribed equipment.

The incident occurred on one of the busiest days of the year for Naxos. These conditions put pressure on the maneuver times, as ships try to maintain dense schedules at piers that are often exposed to the Meltemi. The port of Naxos simultaneously serves conventional vehicles, fast ferries, and routes to the Small Cyclades, with a limited number of docking berths.
