Naxos: power cuts on Monday in 14 areas

Scheduled power cuts will apply on Monday 17 August 2026 in fourteen areas of Naxos and the Small Cyclades, according to an announcement by DEDDIE, the distribution network operator. From 06:00 to 08:30 there will be no electricity at Kastraki, Alyko, Pyrgaki, Agiassos and Kalantos, as well as on the islands of Iraklia and Schinoussa. The same time band also covers the municipal community of Damarionas, where the cut affects Baouzi, Pyrgos Bazaiou, Platania, Archato, Marathos, Mersinos and Lathrinos. The operator attributes the cuts to necessary technical work on the Medium Voltage network and warns that power may be restored at any moment, even before the end of the scheduled period, without warning.

A similar scheduled cut has been announced for the same day in several areas of Mykonos, also on the Medium Voltage network. Work of this kind is usually scheduled for the early morning hours, so as to affect commercial activity and the running of tourist accommodation as little as possible. The combination, however, of fourteen areas on one island and two inhabited small islands in the same time band shows the scale of the work being carried out on the Cyclades network at the peak of the season.

The issue has a second dimension, since this scheduled work comes after strong reactions from residents over unscheduled cuts. In the Mesi area of Naxos the power had been off for about fifteen hours on the eve of and on the day of the Dormition of the Virgin, with residents publicly complaining about the frequency of faults. For the islands, where food refrigeration, water pumping and desalination units depend entirely on the network, the length of a cut translates directly into cost for businesses and households. Iraklia and Schinoussa, with populations of a few hundred residents, have even less room for self-sufficiency.

DEDDIE has not announced whether Monday’s work is part of a wider programme to reinforce the Naxos network, or whether further cuts will follow in the days ahead. Residents are asked to treat the networks as live throughout the cut. The island is already under pressure from the transport traffic of the season, as was shown by the incident with the mooring line of the “Blue Star 1”, while ferry connections are stabilising as the winds ease.
