Motor Oil donates six fire trucks to Agios Vasilis Municipality

Motor Oil (Hellas) Ltd. and the Vardinogianni family have sent an official letter of intent to donate equipment to Agios Vasilis Municipality, following contact with Mayor Yiannis Tatarakis. The letter references the destruction caused by the recent fire in the region and the death of two firefighters, and pledges a set of resources for the municipality’s civil protection services. The package includes one fully equipped Double Cab fire truck suitable for forest firefighting and first response, plus five Pick-Up vehicles for patrols, immediate intervention, and personnel transport. Full personal protective equipment is also provided for 50 volunteer firefighters: forest firefighting uniforms, helmets, gloves, boots, and personal protection gear.

It is important to note precisely what stage this initiative is at. This is not a completed delivery of equipment but a stated donation letter sent to the municipality in writing. Available sources do not provide a financial valuation of the package nor a delivery timeline for the vehicles and personal equipment—details that will determine whether the resources will be available during the current fire season or later. The stated purpose, as outlined in the letter, is solely to strengthen the operational capacity of Agios Vasilis Municipality’s civil protection, with specific mention of protecting the Palm Forest of Preveli—one of southern Crete’s most sensitive ecosystems and simultaneously one of the region’s most visited destinations.

For southern Rethymno, this announcement carries weight beyond its material value. The area was struck by a major fire in which two firefighters lost their lives, and since then the question of resources available to local services has been central to public discussion. Agios Vasilis Municipality covers an extensive mountainous and coastal area with difficult road access, where response time is often decisive, and much of operational readiness depends on volunteers. The equipment for 50 people targets precisely this workforce, which until now has operated without unified personal protection coverage. Meanwhile, the burned areas of the south remain exposed to secondary hazards, as shown by warnings of floods and landslides.

The donation comes at a time when demands on the state are intensifying. The Communist Party’s Local Committee in Rethymno is calling for immediate measures for residents of the fire-stricken south and an investigation into the circumstances in which the two firefighters died, raising the question of whether service staffing and equipment meet needs. In this context, the private donation fills a gap but does not address the institutional side. The open questions are when the donation will be realized, when vehicles and equipment will be delivered, and how they will be integrated into the municipality’s operational planning.
