Zoniana: fire under control, 0.3 hectares burnt

The fire that had broken out at midday on Friday 21 August 2026 in an area of low vegetation at Zoniana, in the Municipality of Mylopotamos, Rethymno, was brought fully under control that evening. According to Nea Kriti, the front was contained at 17:02 and the fire was placed under control at 20:12, that is about three hours later. The final tally of the burnt area comes to 0.3 hectares, of which 0.2 was farmland and 0.1 forest land. The picture on the front had begun to improve from the afternoon hours, but strong forces remained at the scene until the fire was fully extinguished.

Taking part in the operation were 21 firefighters with seven fire engines, one ground team of the 3rd Special Forest Operations Unit and one helicopter, which made water drops during the day. Also significant, according to the same source, was the assistance of water tankers from the Municipality of Mylopotamos, which worked alongside the fire service forces. The combination of ground and airborne means on a front of 0.3 hectares shows the weight given to immediate suppression, so that a small incident in a semi-mountainous area would not develop into an extensive fire. After the front was contained, firefighters remained in the area to fully secure the perimeter and to deal immediately with any flare-ups, a practice systematically followed in areas with dry vegetation and shifting winds during the night.

The Rethymno investigative unit for arson crimes went to the scene in order to investigate the causes of the fire. Sending an investigative unit is standard procedure in wildland fires and does not prejudge the content of its findings. By the evening of Friday 21 August 2026 no conclusion on the cause had been announced, nor had it become known whether the fire is attributed to human action, to negligence or to some other factor. A geographical clarification is needed here: in one of the source’s two reports Zoniana is placed, in error, in Heraklion, while the headline and the classification of the same text refer to Rethymno. The settlement belongs to the Municipality of Mylopotamos in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, on the northern slopes of Psiloritis, close to the boundary with the Heraklion prefecture.

The incident occurred on a day when the whole of Crete was in fire danger category 3, that is high, according to the daily forecast map, while the island is going through a period of prolonged heatwave with increased fire risk. The rapid containment limited the tally to 0.3 hectares, in contrast to larger incidents on Crete this summer, such as the fire in the palm forest of Preveli, where the recovery of the vegetation is estimated in years. The announcements do not indicate whether homes or livestock facilities were threatened, whether a precautionary evacuation of residents was needed or whether anyone was injured. The combination of high temperatures, dry vegetation and winds keeps the services on a high state of readiness across the whole island in the last third of August.
