Falasarna: 41-year-old hiker dies on the path

A 41-year-old visitor from France, who was on holiday in Crete, lost her life on the afternoon of Sunday 23 August 2026 on the path connecting Balos with Falasarna. According to the report, she was returning with her partner when she lost consciousness about one kilometre before reaching the car park. Following a call to 112, the Kissamos Fire Service and the Special Disaster Response Unit were mobilised, with firefighters performing CPR until the paramedics arrived. She was taken by an EKAB ambulance, which set out from the Kissamos Health Centre, but died during transfer to Chania Hospital.

The report cites heatstroke and dehydration as the most likely cause of death. This is an assessment made by the reports and not an official finding, as no examination result has been announced. On the same day the mercury reached as high as 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Chania, at a time when the island was already experiencing a prolonged heatwave. The incident was not isolated: on the same Sunday, a 43-year-old man showed severe malaise at the Imbros Gorge, in Sfakia, while a 53-year-old man was injured near the Agia Fotini Cave in Avdou.

The president of the Chania Mountaineering Association, Stavros Badogiannis, notes that this particular stretch “is bare, with no trees and therefore no shade, crossing it takes over five hours and requires very good preparation.” The route to Balos is among the most popular on the island and is often chosen by visitors who arrive without equipment, without enough water and during the hottest hours of the day. The distance from the nearest road access means that even an immediate response takes time, as transport has to be done on foot to the point a vehicle can reach. The same pattern has led to other protective decisions this year, such as when the Samaria Gorge was closed due to high temperatures.

No ban or access restriction has been announced for the Balos–Falasarna path, nor is it known whether such a measure is being considered by the relevant authorities. It has also not been disclosed whether a forensic examination was ordered, which would be the only element able to confirm or rule out the assessment of heatstroke. Services operating on the mountain and coastal paths of Chania have been called out dozens of times this summer, according to the report, and the number of rescues at hard-to-reach points remains an elevated figure for the Kissamos area and beyond. Neither of the two sources gives the exact number of rescues or the period it corresponds to.
