Palaiochora-Sougia: proposal for a southern road axis

A proposal titled “Decision on the construction of the Southern Road Axis Palaiochora - Sougia” has been tabled by Eftychios Damilakis, leader of the main opposition in the Municipality of Kantanos-Selino; the tabling became known on Thursday 20 August 2026. According to Flashnews.gr, the proposal is heading for discussion and a vote at the Municipal Council meeting of Wednesday 26 August 2026. The main argument is that Palaiochora and Sougia are two distinct tourist destinations of the same municipality which, despite their geographical proximity, do not have a modern, safe and direct road connection. The opposition leader states that “connecting Palaiochora with Sougia is a necessity and must be made a reality”. National and European funds are proposed as the source of financing, in cooperation with the Region of Crete and the competent ministries.

The benefits invoked by the proposal run along four lines. The first is a reduction in travel times between the two settlements, the second an improvement in road safety, the third faster access for ambulances, fire engines and civil protection services, and the fourth a lessening of the isolation of the villages in between, which are today served by the existing road network. The proposal is not presented as an isolated project but is set within a wider southern development axis, combined with the future connection of Elafonisi, Kountoura and Palaiochora. The reports do not mention a budget, an alignment, a length for the project or a timetable for studies, the details that usually determine whether such an initiative can move to a more mature stage.

For the Municipality of Kantanos-Selino the issue has a practical dimension that goes beyond tourism. Sougia and Palaiochora are the two service points for a large part of south-western Crete, an area where distances are measured in time rather than in kilometres because of the mountainous terrain. Palaiochora also acts as the receiving port for search and rescue incidents in the area, such as the operation to rescue 46 people south of Gavdos, which makes overland access to and from it a civil protection issue. The fire dimension adds to the same picture: any road that shortens the approach of fire engines to forest land in the southern zone has direct value in the summer months.

The critical date is the Municipal Council meeting on Wednesday 26 August 2026, where it will become clear whether the proposal gathers a majority and whether it will turn into a formal request from the municipality to the Region of Crete and the ministries. Up to the publication of this article no response or position by the municipal authority on the proposal has been published, nor has it become known whether a study or earlier planning for this particular alignment already exists. Even in the event of a positive decision, a project of this category requires environmental permitting, technical studies and secured funding, procedures that unfold over years.
