Gavdos: 131 migrants in two night-time operations

Two separate location and rescue operations were completed on the night of Thursday 20 to Friday 21 August 2026 in the sea area south of Gavdos, with a total of around 131 people who had been aboard three boats. According to ERT News and Flashnews.gr, in the first operation 43 foreign nationals were located on one boat, roughly 20 nautical miles south of the island; the sighting was made by a Frontex aircraft and a vessel of the same agency carried out the pick-up. A few hours later, in the same sea area, around 88 foreign nationals were located aboard two more boats, again after a sighting by a Frontex aircraft. Both operations were coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and weather conditions in the area were good. All those rescued were taken to the port of Palaiochora and from there to the temporary reception facility at Agyia.

The operational pattern described in both cases has become the rule in the sea zone south of Crete: the sighting is made first from the air and the approach by boat follows, since the distances from the coast are long and the margins for reaction limited. The same sea area had also occupied the authorities over the preceding days. On Wednesday 19 August 2026 there had been an operation to rescue 46 people south of Gavdos, while on Thursday 20 August 2026 142 people within a few hours had been recorded at different points across Crete. The figures from the individual incidents are not added together here, since the announcements concern different time windows and no cumulative total for August has been made public.

For southern Crete the burden of these operations is not only at sea. Palaiochora serves as the landing point for incidents in the area, that is the port where people arrive who need registration, medical checks and transport, at a time when traffic is already heightened because of the tourist peak of the last third of August. The temporary reception facility at Agyia, in Chania, is the next stop and receives successive arrivals from incidents recorded along the whole length of the southern coast. Gavdos itself, with its few permanent residents and limited infrastructure, is not directly involved in these operations, since the sighting and the pick-up take place in open sea, but it remains the geographical reference point by which every such incident is described.

The next stage for the people picked up is the registration and identification procedures at Agyia. The announcements issued so far provide no information on the nationalities, ages or state of health of those rescued, nor on whether there are minors among them. Nor has it become known whether the two operations are connected to each other or whether the operators of the three boats were identified. Update 20:30: The two operations south of Gavdos turned out to be part of a wider wave of arrivals. According to Nea Kriti, on Friday 21 August 2026 seven incidents were recorded along Crete’s southern front, involving a total of 356 people. Beyond Gavdos and Palaiochora, with 182 people transferred to Agyia in Chania, 44 people were located 35 nautical miles south of Kaloi Limenes, 54 at Vatos beach in Myrtos, Ierapetra, 43 on the island of Chrysi and 33 at Psari Forada in the Municipality of Viannos. The two groups in Lasithi were taken to the old primary school of Makrylia and the rest to the port of Heraklion. In Chania, the Central Port Authority arrested a 17-year-old national of South Sudan who was identified by fellow passengers as a smuggler; he is accused of illegal entry, facilitating illegal transport and endangerment, and the presumption of innocence applies.
