Armenoi: “Platanos” springs declared a historic site

Three springs at the site known as “Platanos”, in Armenoi, Apokoronas, have been officially designated a historic site by the Central Council for Modern Monuments. The matter was discussed by teleconference on 30 July 2026, with representatives of the village taking part. The decision closes a campaign begun more than four years earlier by the Armenoi Assembly, the relevant resolution having been submitted to the Modern Monuments Service of Crete on 9 January 2023. Designation as a historic site means that any intervention in the area requires approval from the archaeological services. The file was assembled from material gathered by the residents themselves, without funding from any public body.

In its announcement, the Armenoi Assembly thanks by name the archaeologist Maria Andreadaki-Vlazaki for her support, and the civil engineer Arietta Voskaki, who drew up free of charge the topographic plan that accompanied the file. The same announcement also contains an open dispute with the municipal authority of Apokoronas: the assembly alleges that, through publications on 29 July and 13 August 2026, the municipality appropriated the result, while according to the same claims it was absent from the council’s session. No public response from the municipal authority had been recorded at the time of writing. The residents maintain that the recognition was the outcome of a collective effort and ask that each side’s contribution be recorded accurately.

Springs in the mountain and semi-mountain villages of Crete are not merely landmarks. For centuries they served as water supply points, animal troughs and places of social gathering, and they are often linked to the oldest buildings of the settlement. Designating them a historic site protects the whole of the surrounding area and not only the structures themselves, which has practical consequences for building, road alignments and networks. In Apokoronas, pressure from residential development and tourism has significantly altered the landscape of the villages over the past decade, with natural and historic features often at the centre of local disagreements.

The Armenoi Assembly has called an open citizens’ assembly for Monday 17 August 2026 at 19:00, in the village kafeneio, to discuss the next steps. The demands it is putting forward include expropriation of the land, construction of a sewerage network and demarcation of the protected area. No decision number or relevant Government Gazette publication has been made public, details that will formally finalise the designation. It should be noted that Armenoi in Apokoronas is not to be confused with the village of the same name in Rethymno. More from the area on the Apokoronas page. Until then, the springs are protected on the basis of the council’s decision, which is binding on every service called upon to approve works in the area.
