Palaio Faliro: €827,000 for stormwater networks

Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias and Palaio Faliro Mayor Giannis Fostiropoulos signed a contract for the construction of new stormwater drainage networks and for upgrades in Palaio Faliro. According to a report by “TA NEA”, the project’s budget comes to €827,000 plus VAT and is covered entirely by the Attica Region’s own resources, without co-financing from any other source. Completion of the works is set for mid-2027. The interventions will take place along six road axes: Amfitheas Avenue and Achilleos, Endymionos, Tritonos, Omirou and Eleftheriou Venizelou streets. It is a combined project, not limited to stormwater drainage but also including surface upgrades on the same streets, so that the two categories of work do not require two separate rounds of excavation.

The project’s scope includes 1,758 metres of traffic-calmed street, 3.5 metres wide, with a maximum speed limit of 20 kilometres per hour, as well as 154 controlled parking spaces. A traffic-calmed street is a type of road where pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles share the same space, usually at a single level, with low speed enforced through the road’s geometry rather than signage alone. Controlled parking, in turn, allocates spaces among residents and visitors and is usually accompanied by a municipal council regulatory decision setting hours, fees and eligible users. The stormwater network component concerns the collection and removal of rainwater, so it does not accumulate at low points along the streets. The breakdown of the budget between the networks and the upgrades has not been announced.

Palaio Faliro is a coastal municipality in the southern sector of Athens, between Kallithea and Alimos, with most of its residential fabric developed at low elevation near the Saronic coastline. This topography, combined with dense construction and extensive impermeable surfaces, makes certain axes vulnerable to water accumulation during periods of heavy rainfall, as water flows down from higher points toward the coast. Amfitheas Avenue runs through the municipality parallel to the seafront and carries significant traffic load, while the project’s other streets lie in residential neighbourhoods. The Attica Region has recently signed a series of contracts with municipalities under its authority, such as the contract for the Hydra heliport, while nearby in Kallithea work was recently completed with the opening of Palaia Poseidonos street.

The exact start date of the works has not been announced, nor has a timetable per road axis, details that usually emerge once the contractor is set up on site. The project’s contractor has also not been disclosed, nor whether traffic regulations or temporary parking bans are planned during the works on Amfitheas Avenue and the other five streets. The municipality has not announced whether the 154 controlled parking spaces will be allocated to residents, visitors, or a combination of both, nor when the relevant scheme will take effect. It remains unclear whether the project is part of a broader flood-prevention plan for the southern sector or addresses individual problem spots. The mid-2027 deadline leaves a margin of about ten months from the signing, provided the works begin promptly.
