Elefsina: sailing ban on a cargo ship

A Greek-flagged cargo ship struck the quay at the port of Elefsina lightly in the afternoon hours of Wednesday 19 August 2026, during mooring manoeuvres. According to what THRIASSIO reported, citing the Hellenic Coast Guard, the impact caused damage to the ship’s port stern side. No member of the crew was injured, nor was anyone else who was on the site. The checks that followed found no marine pollution in the area of the port. The Central Port Authority of Elefsina is conducting a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances in which the incident occurred, while the ship has been banned from sailing until a seaworthiness certificate is produced by the competent organisation. The name of the ship has not been made public and no responsibility has been attributed to any person or service.

Mooring is the procedure by which a ship approaches and ties up at the quay, and it is carried out at low speed, with a combination of engines, rudder and often tugs, while the lines are passed to the moorers in stages. It is one of the most demanding manoeuvres in seafaring, as it is affected by the wind, the current, the cargo and the available clear distance.
