A fatal traffic accident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, August 18, 2026 in Kos. According to the bulletin of the South Aegean Regional Police Directorate, at 07:45 on Mikrasiaton Refugees Street, in the Marmari area, a two-wheeled moped swerved and overturned. Its driver was a 24-year-old foreigner, who was fatally injured. The exact causes and circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the Kos Traffic Department, which is conducting a preliminary investigation. The identity of the victim is not being released. Marmari is located on the north coast of Kos and is connected to the town by a country road with significant traffic in the summer months.

The time of the incident, early in the morning, and the fact that no second vehicle was involved, point to a one-way accident, a category that is often recorded on the islands during the summer months. Kos gathers a very large number of two-wheelers, both private and rented, while the provincial road network has places with limited width and incomplete markings. Small displacement mopeds are the most common means of transport on the island and are associated with the majority of serious injuries recorded during the season. The preliminary investigation will examine the condition of the road surface, any brake marks and the technical condition of the two-wheeler.

The same report from the police department also records a series of other cases in the Dodecanese. In Kos, in the afternoon hours of August 16, a 19-year-old foreigner was arrested by the Department of Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes, as according to a complaint he made indecent gestures against a minor; the case is characterized as an insult to sexual dignity and the arrested person is presumed innocent. In Rhodes, in the early morning hours of August 17, the Narcotics Prosecution Department arrested a 16-year-old citizen with a small amount of raw cannabis, while in the evening a 20-year-old man was arrested with 1.4 grams of cocaine and 1.3 grams of cannabis. Cases involving minors are handled in a special manner, without the release of information that could lead to identification.

In Kalymnos, at midday on August 17, the Kalymnos Police Department arrested two citizens, aged 36 and 47, for illegally occupying a section of beach with umbrellas and sunbeds. The latter category of cases has grown significantly this year as beach patrols have been stepped up across the country with the help of aerial media and digital citizen reporting apps.
