Mani: floods after two-hour storm

A severe thunderstorm struck eastern Mani on the afternoon and evening of Saturday, 15 August 2026, with heavy rainfall lasting approximately two hours and causing extensive damage. According to local reports carried by Peloponnese media, 140 tonnes of water per stremma were recorded, a measurement attributed to local observations and not yet verified by the National Meteorological Service. Affected areas included Oitylo, Karavostasi, Alypa, Kokkala, Exo Nymfi, Lagia, and Porto Kayo. Initial images from the region showed roads covered with sediment and rocks.

The main problem was motorists trapped on roads that flooded within minutes. The Fire Service, assisted by police, conducted rescues, with visitors also trapped in the Karavostasi area. A woman was struck by lightning that hit her car and was taken to Sparta General Hospital, where she remained under observation in stable condition. Local authorities worked late into the evening to restore road access. Rescues were completed without loss of life, though the main problems occurred at points where roads intersect with riverbeds without adequate drainage structures.

Mani’s topography makes such phenomena particularly destructive. The steep slopes of the Taygetus descend into narrow valleys and riverbeds that remain dry most of the year, causing intense rainfall to convert almost immediately into high-speed torrents. The rocky and shallow soil absorbs minimal water, while traditional embankments and dry stone walls that once controlled runoff have largely been abandoned. Residents report damage to houses and agricultural land, though no official damage assessment has yet been completed.

Until the publication of this article, no statement had been issued by the Civil Protection Secretariat or Fire Service with an official toll, nor had damage been recorded by the municipality. This phenomenon occurred on the same day when much of the country faced very high fire risk, reflecting the geographical variation of summer weather conditions in Greece. Eastern Mani receives large numbers of visitors in August, increasing exposure to such sudden phenomena. Authorities urge drivers not to attempt to cross flooded areas, as even a few centimetres of fast-moving water can sweep away vehicles.
