Bad weather “cuts” Evia in two, flooding hits Skiathos too

Strong bad weather struck on the night of Saturday 26 September 2026 and the early morning hours of Sunday 27 September 2026 Euboea and Skiathos, with intense rainfall that developed over a short time period. Large volumes of water inundated settlements, flooded homes, roads and courtyards, while causing damage to crops and power cuts. The phenomenon struck both Euboea and the island of Skiathos, creating problems in the daily life of residents and visitors and testing the resilience of the road network and infrastructure of the two areas.

According to a measurement attributed to the network of the National Observatory of Athens as carried by in.gr, approximately 130 millimetres of rain fell in Skiathos in approximately one hour, around 20:00 on Saturday 26 September 2026. Meanwhile, in Euboea, the network of stations of the National Observatory of Athens recorded in the Kymi area 115.6 millimetres of rain by 17:40 the same evening. The two measurements, from different locations and times, depict the range and intensity of the phenomenon both in the island and in the mainland part of the affected region. The large quantity of rain in a short time explains, according to press reports, the speed with which floods formed in urban and rural areas.

In Euboea, homes in Psachna flooded, while in the Triada area roads, courtyards and homes flooded. The road to Northern Euboea closed at Derveni due to landslides, a fact which, according to press reports, “cut the island in two”. Damage to crops and power cuts were also recorded in parts of the island. Anti-flooding works are in progress in various areas of the country, such as the anti-flooding project of 4.55 million euros in Kalamata. In Skiathos the waterfront flooded, while central roads turned into “rivers”; power cuts occurred and there were reports of flight cancellations. At sea, according to disruption data from the Ferryhopper platform, on Sunday 27 September 2026 the following routes were cancelled: Skiathos–Glossas, Mantoudi–Glossas and Mantoudi–Skiathos at 10:30, as well as the Skiathos–Mantoudi route at 15:30. There is no report of injuries or deaths from the phenomenon.

The same bad weather system led the General Secretariat for Civil Protection to issue on Sunday 27 September 2026 a bulletin on weather deterioration, effective for eastern Thessaly and mainly Magnesia, the Sporades, western Crete, the western Cyclades and Euboea. The bulletin forecasts gale-force northeast winds of intensity 7 to 8 Beaufort in the Central and Northern Aegean, conditions that could further hinder maritime communications. Conditions remain unstable on Sunday 27 September 2026, with the warning bulletin in effect, and the authorities recommend increased caution in the affected areas as the phenomenon develops.
