Weather to worsen Sunday: rain, storms and hail

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection, under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, issued an updated bulletin on Sunday 27 September 2026 with data from the National Meteorological Service (EMY) regarding the deteriorating weather conditions unfolding in the country. The bulletin reports strong rainfall and thunderstorms, localized hail, and gale-force winds, and was reissued the same day by the Fire Service. According to EMY data, the heaviest rainfall and thunderstorms, with the possibility of hail, are expected until the early morning hours of Sunday 27 September 2026 in eastern Thessaly and mainly in Magnesia, the Sporades, western Crete, and the western Cyclades. In Euboea the phenomenon of strong rainfall and thunderstorms remains active until the afternoon hours. Meanwhile, in the Central and Northern Aegean the EMY forecasts gale-force northeast winds of intensity 7 to 8 Beaufort, which hinder navigation in the region. The maximum temperature is expected around 24°C, with the Dodecanese standing out with values from 25 to 27°C, according to the service.

For residents and visitors in areas in the path of the system, the deterioration entails increased risk of flooding phenomena on roads, streams and rivers, particularly in Magnesia, the Sporades, western Crete, the western Cyclades and Euboea. Gale-force winds in the Central and Northern Aegean may affect maritime routes, while possible hail increases risk for movements in open areas. This situation comes one day after the EMY’s emergency bulletin for an orange alert level in the Ionian Sea and the Peloponnese on Saturday 26 September 2026, as had been announced in a previous weather alert, a detail that shows the duration and extent of the unstable weather system over the country in the last two days.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection calls on citizens to remain vigilant and recommends a series of self-protection measures while the deterioration continues. Among these are securing objects that could be swept away by wind or water, cleaning gutters and drains to avoid water accumulation, avoiding passage through rivers and streams, and avoiding work in open spaces when lightning is occurring. In case of hail, the guidance is to remain inside a building or vehicle, while drivers are urged to avoid passage through flooded roads.
