EMY: Rain and storms in Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) issued a forecast for rain and strong thunderstorms in eastern Greece on Wednesday 23 September 2026, according to a report by Newsit. According to the forecast, the most intense phenomena were expected in the early morning hours in Thessaly, with emphasis on the coastal areas of Magnesia, as well as in the Sporades and Evia, regions that were at the center of the bad weather during the morning period. The EMY stressed that this was an unstable system that primarily affected the eastern and northeastern parts of the country, leaving the western regions relatively unaffected.

According to the EMY, the phenomena were expected to show gradual improvement from midday on Wednesday 23 September 2026 and onwards, as the unstable atmosphere that caused the rainfall in the eastern regions would gradually weaken during the afternoon hours. In the western parts of the country, the weather was expected to remain, for the most part, clear, without notable phenomena throughout the day. Winds were forecast with intensity of 4 to 6 Beaufort, intensifying the sense of coolness especially in the eastern and island parts of the country during the day, without, however, any particular problems from their effect being expected.

Regarding temperature, the EMY forecast values ranging from 4 degrees Celsius in western Macedonia to 27 degrees in Crete, demonstrating the significant differentiation of weather between northern and southern regions of the country during the day. This difference of approximately 23 degrees between the coldest mountainous parts of the north and the warmest southern islands reflects the transitional phase of weather that the country is going through, with autumn having already made its presence felt in the north, while in the south temperatures remain relatively high. The forecast for Wednesday 23 September 2026 comes to complement a previous EMY warning for strong rain and thunderstorms, while unstable weather with intense rainfall had also been recorded in the northwestern Aegean the previous day, confirming the general instability that prevailed in the eastern part of the country in recent days.

According to the EMY, a new deterioration in weather is expected from Friday 25 September 2026, without, however, detailed information having been announced yet regarding the intensity and extent of the new phenomena. This announcement gives advance warning of a continuation of the unstable period at the end of the week, following a relatively calm intermediate phase during the preceding days. Such successive waves of instability are not unusual during the first two months of autumn, as the atmosphere gradually adapts to the lower temperatures of the season.
