EMY: rain and storm warning until Wednesday

The National Meteorological Service has issued a new warning for intense weather phenomena, according to a report by news.gr. As the NMS states, «at intervals heavy rainfall and localised thunderstorms that will be accompanied temporarily by a high frequency of lightning» are forecast, while in several areas of the country local hail showers cannot be ruled out. According to news.gr, the NMS warning is in effect from Tuesday 22 September 2026 until the early morning hours of Wednesday 23 September 2026. The areas expected to be most affected are Thessaly, with emphasis on coastal Magnesia, the Sporades, central Euboea, Halkidiki, the Ionian Sea and the North Aegean. In the northeastern Aegean and the Ionian Sea, winds are expected to reach up to 6-7 Beaufort, while in some areas the temperature is expected to drop by 5-6 degrees Celsius.

These conditions are expected to affect movement in parts of the country within the warning zone, particularly in coastal and island areas of the Ionian and the North Aegean, where wind intensity, up to 6-7 Beaufort according to the NMS, may affect coastal shipping. In Thessaly, the Sporades, Euboea and Halkidiki, heavy rainfall and possible hail showers can hamper agricultural work and outdoor activities during the hours when the phenomena occur, while general caution is advised for movement within the areas mentioned by the NMS. The temperature drop of 5-6 degrees Celsius in some areas is also expected to be noticeable, particularly towards the end of the warning, marking a change in the weather pattern after the phenomena.

The NMS recommends increased caution for the duration of the warning, which, according to news.gr, remains in effect until the early morning hours of Wednesday 23 September 2026. The weather is expected to improve gradually after the end of the phenomenon, with the competent services monitoring its development in the areas placed on alert.
