Korinthia: four-vehicle pile-up, two injured

Two people were injured in a chain collision involving four vehicles that occurred at around 14:00 on Sunday 16 August 2026 on the Corinth-Tripoli national road. The crash happened in the Athens-bound carriageway, shortly after the Spathovouni toll station, at a point with heavy traffic because of the return of holidaymakers from the mid-August break. An EKAV ambulance was also involved in the collision, according to reports carried by local and national media.

Three EKAV ambulances were mobilised at the scene, picking up those affected and taking the two injured people to the General Hospital of Corinth. Forces of the Hellenic Police and the Fire Service also took part in the operation. The condition of the injured has not been made known by any official source. The vehicles left stranded on the carriageway caused an immediate traffic problem, with delays on the motorway in the direction of Athens.

The Corinth-Tripoli stretch takes an especially heavy load every August, as it is the main road axis to and from the Peloponnese. This particular Sunday coincided with the start of the return after the mid-August holiday, a period during which the traffic police apply special measures and increase patrols on the main axes. Chain collisions on motorways are usually attributed to a combination of high speeds and insufficient safe distance, yet the causes of this particular incident have not been announced and are being investigated by the competent authorities.

A few hours earlier, in the same area, a fire had broken out at Solomos in Corinthia; it was contained but also caused problems for vehicle traffic on the motorway. The combination of the two incidents weighed on conditions along the axis during the day. Drivers are urged to check the state of the network before setting out and to keep safe distances, especially at points where traffic slows abruptly after toll stations.
