Ionian: 349 helmet offences in a single week

Three hundred and forty-nine offences for failing to wear a protective helmet were recorded in the Ionian Islands within one week, from 10 to 16 August 2026, according to figures released by the General Regional Police Directorate of the Ionian Islands and reported by the Zakynthos newspaper «Imera». The offences emerged from 1,383 checks, that is roughly one citation for every four checks. The breakdown per island shows 136 offences in Corfu, 103 in Zakynthos, 64 in Lefkada and 46 in Kefalonia. Of the total number of offenders, 272 were drivers and 77 passengers, an indication that the omission is not confined to those at the wheel.

The analysis of the drivers reveals which vehicles dominate the islands’ roads in August: 142 offences involved two-wheelers, 93 light personal electric vehicles, the so-called Ε.Π.Η.Ο., and 37 ATV-type vehicles. The combination of rented mopeds, electric scooters and quad bikes has radically changed the picture of local traffic over the past decade. Many users are driving such a vehicle for the first time, on an unfamiliar and often narrow road network, with surfaces made slippery by sand and with heavy traffic in the evening hours. The ΓΕ.Π.Α.Δ. itself sums up what is at stake with the phrase “life is worth far more than a helmet”.

Zakynthos stands out, with 103 offences recorded, a figure disproportionate to the island’s population, which is several times smaller than that of Corfu. The explanation lies in the composition of tourist traffic and in the large concentration of rented two-wheelers and quad bikes in specific zones. Under the new Road Traffic Code, Law 5209/2025, failure to wear a helmet carries a fine of 350 euros and withdrawal of the driving licence for thirty days, a sanction clearly stricter than the previous regime. For a visitor who has rented a two-wheeler, the withdrawal of the licence means in practice the end of travelling by that means for the rest of the holiday.

The figures cover only one week and do not allow conclusions about the year’s trend, nor has it been announced how many of the fines were collected or how many licences were ultimately withdrawn. The police directorate has announced in advance that targeted checks will continue until the end of the tourist season, so a new picture is expected in the next summary bulletins. The crucial question remains whether the checks translate into a reduction in serious injuries, given that two-wheelers and ATVs account for a disproportionate share of severe incidents on the islands. The issue concerns both road safety and tourism, since the image of a destination is directly affected by accidents at peak season.
