Euboea earthquake felt as far as Attica

A seismic tremor occurred at 09:42 on Friday 18 September 2026 northeast of Vasilika, Istiaia, in northern Euboea, with a focal depth of approximately 5 kilometres. The earthquake was felt across much of Euboea, as well as in Attica, where numerous residents reported feeling the tremor. The phenomenon lasted several seconds and prompted residents to leave buildings, particularly in the areas closest to the epicentre.

Regarding the magnitude of the tremor there is a minor discrepancy in early reports: Naftemporiki reported a magnitude of 4.3 Richter, while LarissaNet reported 4.2 Richter. This discrepancy is not unusual, as automatic solutions from seismological institutes are often revised in the first hours following a quake, and a difference of 0.1 on the Richter scale falls within normal margins of variation for early assessments. Seismologist Efthymios Lekkas commented publicly on the tremor, noting the significance of monitoring such events.

As of the time this article was written, no damage to buildings or infrastructure, nor any injuries, had been reported in either of the two affected areas. The intensity of the tremor was sufficient to cause concern among residents of Istiaia and surrounding settlements, while in Attica it was felt mainly in taller buildings in the northern suburbs. The tremor was strong enough that it triggered automatic notifications on mobile phones in parts of Attica, causing temporary alarm before the extent of the event became clear.

The competent authorities are expected to continue monitoring the area over the coming hours, as aftershocks are a common phenomenon following tremors of this magnitude and are often recorded for days after the main quake. The final magnitude and precise focal depth of the earthquake are to be determined by the seismological institutes, and aftershock sequences are likely to continue with smaller tremors over the next several days.
