Magnitude 4.9 earthquake in waters off Kefalonia

A seismic tremor of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred on the evening of Saturday 12 September 2026, at 20:51, in a maritime area southwest of Kefalonia. The tremor was recorded by the Geodynamic Institute, according to a report in Eleftheros Typos. Immediately after the earthquake, local authorities were placed on alert and carried out patrols both in Kefalonia and on neighbouring Zakynthos, in order to determine whether there had been damage to buildings or infrastructure. The Fire Service reported that it had not received any calls from citizens that would require intervention or rescue operations, and by the evening of Sunday 13 September 2026 no injuries had been recorded. This fact explains why authorities and residents react immediately to any perceptible tremor, with preventive checks on buildings, schools and infrastructure. Seismic activity in the region is generally frequent, without this meaning that every tremor leads to catastrophic consequences.
