3.6 Richter earthquake near Aitoliko

A seismic tremor measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale occurred on Monday 7 September 2026, at 13:51, in the Aitoloakarnania region. According to the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake epicentre was located 7 kilometres northwest of Aitoliko, while the focal depth was calculated at 5 kilometres. The tremor was felt in parts of the wider area, but so far no reports have been recorded of public concern or damage to buildings and infrastructure. The Geodynamic Institute recorded the tremor through its seismograph network and proceeded to immediately announce the data, as is customary for every seismic tremor recorded in Greek territory.

This is an earthquake of small to moderate magnitude, which, according to experts, falls within the framework of normal seismic activity periodically recorded in western Greece. The Aitoloakarnania region is located in an area with a history of moderate seismicity, but the current tremor is not considered a precursor of wider seismic sequence, according to available data at this time. No injuries were reported in relation to the tremor. The Geodynamic Institute continues to monitor the area for possible aftershocks, which are considered normal phenomena following earthquakes of this magnitude, without this meaning a forecast for stronger seismic activity. Residents of the area, according to first reports, did not need to take any particular protective measures beyond the usual precautions recommended after each felt tremor.

Residents of the area were urged to remain informed via official announcements from the Geodynamic Institute and Civil Protection, but there is no reason for concern based on current data. Experts remind of the importance of following basic earthquake safety rules in case of an earthquake, regardless of the magnitude of the tremor, such as checking for cracks in older buildings. No further action is expected from the authorities beyond the usual monitoring of seismicity in the area over the coming days, while the Geodynamic Institute will continue to inform the public if new tremors are recorded in the wider Aitoliko area.
