Two earthquakes in Halki and Astros Kynouries on Saturday

Two independent seismic tremors were recorded by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in two completely different regions of the country. The first occurred at 02:55 in the early morning, with epicenter approximately three kilometers southeast of Astros Kynouries and focal depth 63.9 kilometers, magnitude 4.5 on the Richter scale, according to argolika.gr. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated the magnitude at 4.6 degrees, with epicenter approximately 28 kilometers south of Argos. Due to the relatively great focal depth, the tremor was felt particularly not only in Arcadia and Argolida but also in other prefectures, even in Athens.

The second tremor was recorded in the afternoon of the same day, at 15:32, with epicenter in a maritime area four kilometers west of Halki in the Dodecanese and focal depth 15.3 kilometers, magnitude 4 on the Richter scale, according to the Geodynamic Institute and reports from Democratiki of Rhodes and enikos.gr. Although the two earthquakes were recorded on the same day, they are not related to each other: Halki is located in the southern Dodecanese and Astros in eastern Peloponnese, at a distance of hundreds of kilometers, with the two tremors belonging to completely different seismotectonic zones. None of the available sources mentioned material damage or injuries from the two earthquakes.

Both areas are located in sections of the country with known seismic activity, as Greece records daily small and larger tremors, the majority of which are detected only by the instruments of the Geodynamic Institute. In the case of Astros, the magnitude and depth of the tremor explain why it was felt over such a wide geographic area, which raised questions among residents of many areas of Peloponnese and Attica. In Halki, a small island with limited permanent population, the maritime position of the epicenter limited possible effects on land. Seismologists remind us that earthquakes of magnitude 4 to 4.5 Richter are relatively frequent in the Greek area and rarely cause damage, unless the focal depth is very shallow or the epicenter is located very close to an inhabited area.

The competent authorities are monitoring seismic activity in both areas, without any special announcement or recommendation having been issued so far. Residents of Halki and Astros Kynouries are called to follow the usual self-protection guidelines in case of an earthquake and to remain informed from official sources about any aftershocks. Both Halki and Astros Kynouries remained in normal conditions on Saturday night, with life in the two places continuing normally. The Geodynamic Institute is expected to update the data on the two tremors if newer information emerges.
