Eastern Mani: 27 inspections in Oitylo

The process of recording and assessing the impact of the flood that struck Eastern Mani on 15 August 2026 is in full progress. According to an update from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the Municipality of Eastern Mani, and specifically in the Municipal Community of Oitylo, teams from the General Directorate for the Restoration of the Effects of Natural Disasters carried out a total of 27 inspections. These produced twelve green and eight yellow buildings, while no red building was recorded. Among business premises, five green and one yellow building were recorded, while one green building was recorded in the public buildings category and one more in the category of other buildings.

The absence of any red classification is the most significant element of the record, since it means that none of the buildings inspected was judged unfit for use. The process will continue on Wednesday 19 August, with the aim of completing the record in all the affected areas and producing a full, documented picture of the extent of the damage. The Mani inspections are reported separately from the 427 inspections carried out in the same week in areas hit by fires in Achaia, Argolida, Boeotia, Western Attica, Rethymno and Fokida.

The severe weather that caused the damage occurred on the afternoon and evening of Saturday 15 August and lasted about four hours. The station of the National Observatory of Athens and meteo.gr at Kokkala in Mani, which has only been operating since May 2026, recorded 141 millimetres of rain within that period and about 2,000 lightning strikes. The Fire Service received more than fifty calls and ten people were freed from vehicles. The settlements of Oitylo, Neo Oitylo, Karavostasi, Alypa, Limeni, Nyfi, Exonymfi, Kokkala, Lagia and Porto Kagio were hit, with cars swept into the sea and damage to road surfaces and bridges. There was no loss of human life.

Alongside the inspections, the Regional Unit of Laconia has opened the damage recording process for businesses, with applications submitted to the Development Directorate and a deadline of 19 October 2026. The Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Kostas Katsafados, had said earlier that «what happened in Mani is something unique» and that since 16 August the situation has returned to normal. On Wednesday 19 August he, together with the Secretary General for Natural Disaster Recovery and State Aid Petros Kambouris, is travelling to Chalkidiki for the fire in Kassandra.
