Corinth: water non-potable in seven settlements

Mains water in seven settlements of Korinthia is classified as non-potable from Friday 21 August 2026, according to an announcement by the Corinth Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company posted on Thursday 20 August 2026 at 19:20. The measure covers Loutra Oraias Elenis, Galataki, Almyri, Katakali, Rito, Sofiko and Korfos. The company clarifies that the water remains suitable for any other domestic use and that the restriction applies until the necessary analyses are carried out. No interruption of supply has been announced in any of the seven settlements, which are named individually in the announcement, with no other areas of the municipality included.

The measure is being taken, as the company itself states, “due to increased water consumption”. To cover demand, these settlements will be supplied with water from local boreholes, mixed with water from Stymfalia. The change in the supply source is also the reason new analyses are required before the water can be classified as potable again. There is a discrepancy in the dates in the publication: the headline says Friday 21/6, while the body of the announcement sets the start of the measure at 21-8-2026. The date that applies is 21 August 2026, since that is the date given in the company’s own text and it matches the time of posting. Mixing sources is standard practice when demand exceeds the capacity of a single supply, but it requires a fresh check of the quality characteristics of the water reaching the tap.

The measure coincides with the peak of the tourist season along the coastal zone from Sofiko to Korfos, where the population multiplies over the summer months with holidaymakers and visitors in accommodation. The seven affected settlements are in the eastern part of the municipality, an area that depends heavily on local boreholes. For food and drink businesses and catering professionals, classifying the water as non-potable means a mandatory switch to bottled water for every use involving consumption, with no relevant assistance announced. The same applies to accommodation businesses, which have to inform their guests in the middle of the peak season.

The Corinth water company has announced no date for the completion of the analyses, nor any provision for distributing bottled water to residents of the seven settlements. Nor is it clarified whether the restriction will be extended to other areas if consumption stays at the same levels. The increased demand is linked to the prolonged spell of high temperatures, as the heatwave puts pressure on water networks and reserves at the same time. It has not been clarified which body will carry out the analyses or how often they will be repeated for as long as the sources are being mixed.
