Boeotia: major wildfire in Stefani

A major forest fire broke out on the afternoon of Tuesday 25 August 2026 in the area of Stefani in Boeotia, around 15:40, according to the Fire Service. The front developed in a hard-to-reach spot, leaving ground crews facing serious access difficulties in the area. The nature of the terrain forced the Fire Service to rely heavily on aerial resources, while a strong ground force was also mobilised to contain the flames from spreading toward residential areas and farmland in the wider zone. The difficulty of reaching the ignition point was, according to the same source, the main challenge of the first phase of the operation, since any delay in containing the front increases the risk of faster spread.

At the scene, according to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, 85 firefighters with 28 vehicles are operating, while four ground crew teams have been deployed at the most difficult points of the front, where vehicles cannot reach. From the air, four aircraft and four helicopters are assisting, eight aerial resources in total, carrying out continuous water drops to halt the fire’s progress before it reaches denser vegetation. In support, the Municipality of Tanagra provided water-carrying vehicles to assist the operation, a move that reflects the usual practice of cooperation between local government and the Fire Service in major incidents of this scale. The scale-up of the force, with the simultaneous activation of ground crew teams and eight aerial resources, shows that the incident was treated as serious from the outset.

The Stefani fire comes amid a wider picture of heightened risk, as Tuesday 25 August 2026 was designated a category 3 day, meaning high risk of fire outbreak, in several regions of the country, as had already been flagged by the relevant alert on the high fire risk in eight regions. The new front comes just days after 49 rural and forest fires were recorded in a single 24-hour period nationwide, a sign of the pressure the fire-protection mechanism has been under recently due to the prolonged heat and dry ground. The frequency of ignitions in recent days, combined with difficult weather factors, has kept the Fire Service on constant alert, with forces spread across many fronts simultaneously in different regions of the country.

By Tuesday evening no 112 alert had been issued to residents of the area, nor had any injury or damage to homes been reported. The Fire Service has not yet determined the extent of the burned area, nor has the cause of the outbreak been clarified. Forces remain at the scene aiming for full control of the front before nightfall, when the absence of aerial resources limits firefighting capacity and the burden falls solely on the ground teams that remain on standby. A possible flare-up in the early morning hours of Wednesday cannot be ruled out, as usually happens with fronts in hard-to-reach areas, which is why the authorities are expected to maintain an increased presence at the scene in the coming hours.
