Fire service: 34 wildfires in a 24-hour period

Thirty-four agricultural and forest fires broke out in Greece from 6:00 pm Friday 14 to 6:00 pm Saturday 15 August 2026, according to the daily update from the Fire Service. Of these, 27 were handled at the initial stage, meaning they were extinguished before they could develop, while seven remained active by the time the bulletin was issued. Local investigative offices and fire crime investigation teams are examining the causes of each incident. The number of incidents in a 24-hour period remains consistently high since mid-July.

In a separate bulletin from the same day, the Service announced one arrest and two administrative fines for acts on 14 August. A man was arrested in Oropos Municipality for using a cooking device, with a fine of 3,750 euros. In Xanthi, a fine was imposed on a foreign national for burning vegetation waste on residential land, while in Chersoniso Municipality, Heraklion, a fine was imposed on a Greek national for burning crop residue. All individuals are presumed innocent. The ratio of 27 to 34 demonstrates that the immediate response system functioned effectively in the vast majority of cases, though success is ultimately measured by the few fires that escape and develop into large fronts.

A separate bulletin was issued on Sunday, 16 August, for a fire at a commercial space in the Kalokhori locality of Delta Municipality, Thessaloniki, which broke out on the afternoon of the previous day. Twenty-four firefighters with ten vehicles participated in extinguishing efforts, and extensive material damage was caused with an investigation underway. Such bulletins provide a coherent picture of daily pressure on the Service during the fire prevention period, beyond the large fronts that dominate news coverage. Hot work and burning of residue remain the two most frequent causes in recent weeks’ bulletins.

During the same 24-hour period, the country remained on heightened alert, with many areas in fire risk category 4, and the General Secretariat of Civil Protection declaring Red Code mobilization status for Sunday in Attica, Boeotia, Euboea, Cyclades, and Crete. Earlier that week, the Service had announced arrests and fines in seven areas, as TodayGrid reported in the story «Fire service: arrests and fines in seven areas.» Fine amounts escalate depending on daily hazard index, with higher amounts imposed in categories 4 and 5. The Fire Service publishes these bulletins daily during the fire prevention period, which runs from 1 May to 31 October. Citizens are urged to immediately notify 199 upon detection of smoke, as the time of first reporting remains the most critical factor for every incident’s outcome.
