Limnos: 59 bathers evacuated from a beach

An operation to evacuate bathers from a beach on Limnos was carried out on the afternoon of Friday 21 August 2026, as a fire that had broken out shortly after 14:00 quickly spread. The Hellenic Coast Guard evacuated 59 citizens by sea from Thanos beach, in the south of the island. Taking part in the operation were one Coast Guard patrol boat, one Coast Guard lifeboat, one fishing vessel and five private boats. The participation of private and fishing boats shows that the evacuation was carried out with the help of whatever means were available in the area at that time.

The operation was conducted under the general coordination of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and of the National Coordination Centre for Operations and Crisis Management, and was handled by the Operations Centre of the Hellenic Coast Guard. Following notification from the Myrina Port Authority, the Local Emergency Plan was put into effect, that is the pre-designed framework for mobilising resources that is activated when citizens need to be evacuated from coastal points. One patrol boat and one lifeboat remained on standby in the area, so that they could intervene again if needed.

Alongside the sea operation, an evacuation order was issued for two areas of the island, Profitis Ilias and Agia Paraskevi. The order had been preceded by a message through the 112 emergency number. According to what was reported, the flames reached close to houses, without it becoming known whether any damage was caused. According to the Fire Service, in the 19:29 update there was no longer an active front on Limnos. This development means that the main stage of the firefighting was completed within a few hours, although guarding work and the extinguishing of hotspots usually continue after such an announcement. Thanos beach is at a point reached mainly through a limited road network, which explains why the evacuation was carried out from the sea and not by vehicle. It has not been disclosed how long the operation lasted in total or at which port the 59 citizens were landed.

Some basic details of the case remain unannounced. It has not been disclosed whether there were any injuries, either among the bathers who were evacuated or among residents or firefighters. The size of the burnt area has not been announced, nor whether homes, storage buildings, vehicles or other property were burnt. Nor has any information been given on the cause of the fire, or any announcement made as to whether a preliminary investigation was ordered. Limnos has limited ground firefighting forces compared with the mainland, which makes the deployment of airborne means and surveillance systems on the islands critical during the fire season. The incident occurred on the same day as other fire fronts on mainland Greece, in conditions of high fire risk. Further details are expected to emerge from the inspection that follows such events.
