Fire in Aliveri, Evia, forces reinforced

A fire broke out around midday on Friday 11 September 2026 in a forested area in the Partheni district, within the boundaries of the Municipality of Kymi-Aliveri in Evia. According to a report by SKAI, the fire started around 14:00 and the Fire Service immediately reinforced the forces operating at the scene. Forty firefighters, two squads of the 20th Special Forest Operations Unit (ΕΜΟΔΕ) and 12 vehicles are taking part in the firefighting effort, while 6 aircraft and 2 helicopters are operating from the air, with one of them coordinating the operation from above. Municipal volunteers are also assisting in the effort, reinforcing the manpower on the ground. As of the first reports, the fire remained active, with forces working intensively to contain it, without it yet having been announced as under control.

The outbreak of the fire in Aliveri comes on a day of increased risk for the whole country. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection had classified Evia, together with 21 other areas, in category 3, meaning high fire risk, for Friday 11 September 2026. These conditions, combined with the area’s forest vegetation and the high temperatures typical of September, are making the work of the fire services more difficult and increasing the likelihood of rapid spread. The Fire Service reminds the public that the ban on burning grass and crop residue is in effect throughout the fire season, a measure aimed at limiting the risk of new outbreaks in areas such as Aliveri.

For residents of the wider area, this development meant immediate mobilisation. At 14:21 a message was sent via 112 calling on the population to remain on standby and follow the authorities’ instructions. This notification is intended to ensure that those near the fire front are prepared for possible evacuation, without panic but with attention to the guidance given by the Fire Service and local authorities. The presence of municipal volunteers shows that the local community has activated its own support mechanisms, which is considered important in cases where conditions can deteriorate quickly and coordination between state and local bodies is needed.

In the period ahead, Fire Service forces are expected to continue the firefighting operation with the aim of bringing the fire in Partheni fully under control. The course of the fire front will depend largely on local weather conditions, as the area remained under a high-risk status until the end of the day. Residents are urged to follow official announcements and 112 for any further instructions, while the authorities have not yet announced when the fire is expected to be fully under control. Keeping aerial and ground forces at the scene until dusk is considered standard practice in similar incidents.
