Fire in Makrikapa Evia: 112 evacuation alert for Triada

A new wildfire broke out on Monday 7 September 2026 in a forest area in the Makrikapa region of Evia. First reports spoke of rapid spread of flames due to weather conditions, resulting in the immediate mobilization of a large number of firefighting forces. At 14:55, the emergency service 112 sent a message to residents of the Triada settlement, asking them to evacuate the area and head towards Psachna, following the instructions of the authorities. The evacuation message, as is customary in such incidents, aimed at precautionary removal of residents before the fire reached the settlement. The evacuation process took place under the coordination of local authorities, with residents asked to move safely, avoiding areas where thick smoke was observed. The incident was immediately included in the automatic alert system of the Fire Service, which immediately informed the competent Civil Protection bodies of the severity of the event.

Fighting the fire involve, according to the Fire Service, 55 firefighters with 17 vehicles, reinforced by 3 hiking teams moving through the wooded terrain of the area. The operation also involves aerial means, 2 aircraft and 3 helicopters, which are dropping water on areas where fire remains active. The wider forest area around Makrikapa is estimated at approximately 5,000 hectares, which makes early containment of the flames critical before they spread to a larger portion of the forest. The forces are trying to create firebreaks around the Triada settlement to protect homes. At the same time, a team from the Forest Service has moved to the area, cooperating with the Fire Service to identify the most vulnerable points around the settlement, while the difficulty of access to certain parts of the forest makes the continuous presence of hiking teams in the field necessary.

The fire in Makrikapa broke out on a day when the General Secretariat of Civil Protection had classified much of the country at very high wildfire risk, due to high temperatures and strong winds prevailing in recent days. Evia is one of the areas that have been repeatedly affected by forest fires in recent years, a fact that increases residents’ concern each time a new incident occurs. Weather conditions on the day, with increased temperature and reduced humidity, are considered by experts to be a factor that favoured rapid spread of the fire in its initial stages. In the previous period, several similar incidents have been recorded in forest areas of the country, leading authorities to strengthen prevention measures, while meteorological services had warned from the morning of increased fire risk in several regions of the country, including Evia.

Fire Service forces remain on high alert in the area, aimed at gaining full control of the front before nightfall, when reduced visibility conditions make aerial operations difficult. Residents of Triada who were evacuated await instructions from local authorities for their return to homes, while operation coordination is being carried out from the Fire Service Operations Centre. No material damage or injuries have been announced so far from the incident. Authorities urge residents of the wider area to monitor official announcements and be ready for possible relocation if conditions require. Civil Protection assured that it will continue to inform the public via 112 of any development affecting residents’ safety, while volunteer groups in the area are on standby to support the work of firefighting forces if needed.
