Agrafa: forest fire, aircraft deployed

A fire broke out around 15:00 on Monday, 17 August, in a forested area of Agrafa, in Evrytania, and the Fire Service mobilized forces on the ground and in the air. According to reports by Ta Nea and enikos.gr, 26 firefighters with six vehicles are responding at the scene, and a ground unit from the 4th Special Forest Fire Force is also taking part. Two aircraft are assisting from the air. At the same time, the Aitoloakarnania Arson Investigation Unit was activated and is handling the investigation into the cause of the fire. No estimate of the burned area has been made known, nor has any threat to a residential area or an evacuation order been reported.

Agrafa is one of the most inaccessible mountain areas of mainland Greece, with dense vegetation, steep slopes and a sparse road network. In such terrain, ground forces move slowly, and at many points vehicles cannot approach the fire front at all. For this reason, the contribution of aerial assets and ground units becomes especially important. The Special Forest Fire Forces were set up specifically for forest and mountain environments, where work is done with hand tools, by cutting firebreaks and by containing smaller spot fires before they merge into a single, harder-to-control front.

The scale of the mobilization reflects the logic of immediate, massive first response applied during fire season: many assets deployed within the first minutes, so that a fire has no chance to develop. August brings the year’s most demanding conditions, as vegetation has dried out from summer heat and winds can change a fire’s behavior within a short time. For the mountain communities of Evrytania, what is at stake is not limited to protecting homes: the forest itself supports livestock farming, beekeeping and mountain tourism, activities that suffer for years after a major disaster.

The next step is twofold. On the ground, forces must first contain the fire front and then remain to watch for possible flare-ups, work that in mountainous terrain usually takes several hours after the flames subside. At the same time, the Aitoloakarnania Arson Investigation Unit will record the point of origin and examine the possible scenarios for the cause, from natural causes to human negligence or arson. Update 20:20: In an announcement on Monday evening, 17 August, the Fire Service clarified that, following a search of the area, no fire incident was found in Agrafa, Evrytania. The initial mobilization of forces and aircraft, which this article reported, was based on a report that was not confirmed on the ground. In the same announcement, the service stated that 41 rural and forest fires broke out across the country in the past twenty-four hours, of which 38 were tackled immediately at their initial stage, while forces continued operating on three others. Local arson investigation offices and units of the Arson Crime Investigation Directorate are looking into the causes of the fires.
