Lesvos: foot-and-mouth compensation by Friday

In Lesvos, where an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among sheep, goats and cattle is under way, the platform for submitting compensation applications for affected livestock farmers has not yet opened. According to a report by ypaithros.gr on Tuesday 15 September 2026, the platform is expected to go live by Friday 19 September 2026. Until then, the island’s livestock farmers affected by the outbreak remain in waiting, with no official channel yet open for submitting compensation claims. This delay, even if only a matter of days, matters for a farming community directly facing the consequences of restrictions on animal movement and the suspension of activities imposed by disease control measures. The report does not clarify which body will ultimately manage the platform, nor what the exact application procedure will be.

At the same time, a report by lesvosnews.net dated 12 September 2026, citing a European register, states that 196 official foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks have been recorded in Lesvos, with notifications up to 9 September 2026. This distinction matters and must be stated precisely: the figure of 196 refers to outbreaks, meaning livestock holdings in which at least one case has been confirmed, and not individual cases in animals. These are two different measures, since a single outbreak can involve dozens or even hundreds of animals. Around 40 veterinarians and agronomists have been deployed to trace flocks on the island, a number that, according to a later report, rose to around 50. Their work includes identifying holdings with cases, recording flocks, and supporting measures to limit the spread of the disease in Lesvos.

Livestock farming is one of the main sectors of Lesvos’s local economy, with hundreds of families relying on flocks of sheep, goats and cattle for their income. In island areas where alternative sources of employment are limited, an outbreak that imposes restrictions on animal movement and the marketing of products can directly hit the liquidity of farm holdings. For this reason, the speed with which the compensation process is activated is considered critical to the viability of many livestock holdings, which are called upon to cover operating costs immediately despite the drop in income caused by the disease. Delay in activating support mechanisms, even when measured in days, can worsen the financial pressure on holdings that already operate on tight margins. The issue thus touches the broader local economy of the area, beyond the livestock sector narrowly defined, since livestock farming is also linked to other activities on the island, such as dairy processing.

So far, it has not been announced which body will manage the compensation platform, nor the amount or method of calculating the sums to be paid to affected livestock farmers. Also not yet made public are the total number of animals lost due to the outbreak, the strain of the virus identified in Lesvos, or any estimate of when the spread of the disease is expected to be brought fully under control. The information available, as it emerges from the reports of 12 and 15 September 2026, is limited to the expected opening date of the platform and the number of officially recorded outbreaks. Until official data is provided on the remaining open questions, Lesvos livestock farmers await further information from the competent authorities.
