Rental Refund: 4.9 Million Euros to 17,074 Educators, Doctors and Nurses

The government proceeded to disburse 4.9 million euros to 17,074 educators, doctors and nurses serving in the regions, as rental refund for leases of 2024. The announcement was made on Monday 28 September 2026 by the Vice President of the Government and Government Spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, during a briefing of political correspondents and foreign press correspondents. According to the government spokesperson, the beneficiaries received the equivalent of two monthly rents through direct bank deposits. The government concurrently pre-announced a new payment for the broader rental refund measure, which will be carried out on 30 November 2026 and will concern over one million renters nationwide.

The measure specifically concerns educators, doctors and nurses serving outside their place of permanent residence, in regions of the country. As mentioned by the government spokesperson, the beneficiaries of this category will receive a double rental refund, based on 2025 tax data, within the framework of a special provision. The payment of 30 November is linked to the data maintained by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), while the cost of the programme is borne by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance in cooperation with the AADE. The government did not clarify in detail the precise income or employment criteria that determine which educators, doctors and nurses fall into this category, beyond their service in the regions. According to Mr. Marinakis, this is a permanent annual measure, through which beneficiaries recover two of the twelve monthly rent instalments they pay each year.

The measure is addressed to educational and health personnel who are stationed far from their place of origin or permanent residence, often in island and mountainous areas where housing costs constitute an additional burden for those called to serve there. The double rental refund comes to be added to the other policies that the government presents as supporting incomes in the regions, within the framework of the broader economic policy announced during the briefing. The government presented it as a measure aimed at improving living and working conditions for those serving outside major urban centres, without however providing further information on the exact number of beneficiaries of this particular category that are expected to benefit from the November payment.

The next payment of the rental refund programme has been scheduled for 30 November 2026 and will concern, as announced, over one million renters nationwide, together with the double refund for educators, doctors and nurses in the regions. The announcement is part of the broader framework of government initiatives presented during the briefing of political correspondents, within the framework of the political agenda of the government for autumn 2026. Until then, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the AADE are expected to complete the processing of 2025 tax data that will determine the amount and beneficiaries of the new payment.
