ELGA: payments of 6.6 million euros in 49 prefectures

ELGA (Greek Agricultural Insurance Organization) made payments totaling 6,615,407.66 euros on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The amounts are distributed across 49 prefectures of the country. These are compensation payments to farmers and livestock breeders for damage assessed by the Organization’s inspectors. Beneficiaries are advised to check their bank account activity. The largest amount goes to Achaea, at 1,361,671.57 euros, or about 20.6% of the total. Aetolia-Acarnania follows with 1,132,412.34 euros, roughly 17.1%. Messenia comes third with 909,094.83 euros. Together, these three prefectures account for 3,403,178.74 euros, or more than 51% of today’s payment. This concentration reflects the geographic distribution of the damage that was assessed.

The rest of the top ten includes Laconia with 554,947.22 euros, Elis with 334,953.58 euros, and Larisa with 313,677.00 euros. These are followed by Pella with 311,471.55 euros, Imathia with 213,021.24 euros, Arta with 202,560.57 euros, and Heraklion with 164,793.81 euros. In total, six prefectures receive amounts exceeding 300,000 euros. The distribution shows that the greatest burden falls on Western Greece and the Peloponnese.

In the mid- and lower range are prefectures with significantly smaller amounts. For instance, Corinthia receives 119,304.44 euros, Trikala 49,348.47 euros, and Serres 48,799.62 euros. Kozani receives 44,666.05 euros, Chalkidiki 42,727.86 euros, and Thessaloniki 39,508.58 euros. These are followed by Florina with 34,407.50 euros, Evros with 21,306.64 euros, and Grevena with 19,152.22 euros. The differences reflect both the scale of agricultural production and the extent of the damage.

The smallest amounts in the distribution are symbolic. Samos receives 90.11 euros, Chios 145.20 euros, the Cyclades 511.63 euros, and Zakynthos 1,332.76 euros. These amounts correspond to individual beneficiary cases. Their presence in the table shows that the payment covers the full set of pending assessments. ELGA makes regular payments throughout the year.

ELGA compensation covers damage from natural causes to crop production and livestock. This includes, among other things, hail, frost, flooding, windstorms and animal diseases. The Organization operates on the basis of compulsory insurance of agricultural production. In parallel, the Ministry of Rural Development pays separate compensation for measures against epizootic diseases, such as 4.2 million euros to livestock breeders for pox and foot-and-mouth disease. The two schemes are distinct.

A separate process is underway for damage from this summer’s wildfires. In Western Attica, fire victims in the Municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia are submitting applications to ELGA by August 20.
