Nafplio: Damage notice filed with ELGA over hail

Strong hail and intense rainfall that occurred on Tuesday 22 September 2026 caused significant damage to agricultural crops in the areas of Arachnaio and Midea, within the Municipality of Nafplio in Argolida, with the affected crop being primarily olive cultivation. The Municipality of Nafplio immediately proceeded with a damage report to ELGA (Greek Agricultural Insurance Organisation), according to a report by Argolika.gr on Wednesday 23 September 2026.

The damage report constitutes the first formal step of the procedure through which ELGA is officially notified of damage that has been caused by natural causes, such as hail or intense rainfall, to crops in an area. Practically, its submission by the municipality opens the way for ELGA inspectors to go to the affected areas to record the extent of the damage, while at the same time giving the opportunity for producers themselves to proceed with individual damage reports for their own crops. This is a procedure that is followed systematically in the Greek countryside after extreme weather events, as it constitutes a prerequisite for every subsequent stage of compensation. In Arachnaio and Midea, areas with intense presence of olive cultivation, producers are now called to monitor the next stages of the procedure in order to claim coverage for the damage suffered by their olive trees from the hail and rain of 22 September. The report by Argolika.gr does not specify the amount of damage recorded in the two areas, nor does it provide data on the area in hectares or the number of affected producers, data that is expected to emerge at a later stage from the inspection of ELGA inspectors. The absence of such data at this stage is a usual phenomenon, as the precise recording of damage follows chronologically the initial report and not the reverse. For olive producers in the region, this autumn period coincides often with the preparation of harvest, so damage to the tree or fruit shortly before this phase can have immediate impact on production of the current year, beyond whatever long-term damage has been caused to the trees themselves. The communication of the report by the municipality, instead of waiting for individual applications, speeds up the process, as it collectively informs ELGA of the fact that a specific area was affected, without needing to wait for the first individual report from a producer.

With the report already submitted by the Municipality of Nafplio, the next step concerns the conduct of inspections by ELGA inspectors in the affected areas of Arachnaio and Midea, as well as the submission of individual damage reports by the affected producers. The report does not mention a specific deadline for the submission of reports nor an estimate of the amount of any compensation, data that will emerge from the next announcements by the organization and the municipality.
