Thessaloniki: five arrests over Foinikas attack

Five men were arrested in the early hours of Sunday 16 August 2026 in the Foinikas area of Thessaloniki, facing a series of charges after an incident that began with a complaint about a breach of the peace. According to Ta Nea, eMakedonia and Newsit.gr, the five are alleged to have beaten a 60-year-old man who had asked them to turn the music down, and then to have attacked the police officers who arrived at the scene. During the incident one officer was slightly injured and a patrol car was damaged, while the five tried to flee before being restrained. It has not been made public how much time passed between the call and the officers’ arrival, nor how many patrol cars took part in the operation.

The search that followed led to the seizure of fifteen hunting cartridges, along with a loudspeaker, an amplifier and a mixer, the equipment connected to the original complaint. The charges brought against those arrested, as recorded by the three sources, include violence against public officials, disobedience, bodily harm, threats, insult and damage to property. The accused are presumed innocent until a final court ruling and their identities are not being made public. Violence against officials is punished more severely when it is directed at police officers on duty, while damage to state property is prosecuted as a separate offence. The accumulation of charges determines whether the case will be brought as a misdemeanour or follow a heavier procedure.

The 60-year-old’s condition has not been made public, nor whether he needed hospital treatment. Nor has it been clarified whether the seized cartridges are linked to possession of a weapon and whether a separate case file will be opened for breaching firearms legislation. Some outlets attributed an ethnic identity to those arrested; TodayGrid does not reproduce such labels, as they have no journalistic bearing on the offences and the code of conduct discourages their use. Calls about a breach of the peace are as a rule handled with a warning and, where there is no compliance, with a formal citation; escalation into physical violence and an attack on police officers is a clearly rarer development.

The incident comes during a period of increased breach-of-the-peace calls in the large urban centres, as open-air gatherings grow more frequent in the summer months and temperatures keep residents with their windows open. The five men arrested are being taken before the competent prosecuting authority, which will decide on bringing criminal charges and on how the case will be introduced in court.
