Thessaloniki: Two arrested for holding two men hostage

Two men, nationals of Syria and Egypt, were arrested in central Thessaloniki, accused of holding two undocumented foreign nationals hostage in an apartment at gunpoint. According to information provided by police and reported by Newsit and SKAI, the two victims had paid 3,000 euros to be transported from the Evros border into the interior of the country. They managed to escape when the defendants attempted to move them, which is how the case came to light. The charges brought against them concern illegal transport and facilitation of entry, criminal organisation and robbery.

The case reflects a structure authorities have described for years: the route from the land border to major urban centres is not sold as a single service but broken into separate legs, with different drivers, different intermediaries and intermediate stops in apartments. It is at these points that the violent dimension of the phenomenon often appears, when additional money is demanded from people who have already paid and have nowhere to turn. The fact that the case involves individuals of different nationalities of origin shows that these networks operate on the basis of functionality rather than national background.
