Kavala: burglary ring dismantled across three prefectures

A burglary ring with operations across three prefectures has been dismantled following an investigation by Kavala police authorities. According to a police statement, nine completed thefts and three attempted thefts—totalling twelve residential burglaries—were solved across Kavala, Trikala and Agrinio between 6 July and 4 August 2026. Two foreign nationals were arrested, and authorities recovered 1,280 euros, burglary tools, two mobile phones and three forged documents. The names of the arrested persons are not disclosed, and the presumption of innocence applies fully to all charges until a final court conviction is handed down.

According to the same statement, one of the two is reportedly sought by a North Macedonia Interpol Red Notice for homicide and unlawful weapons possession. This is an outstanding international search, not a conviction: an Interpol notice means a foreign authority is seeking to locate someone without prejudging guilt, while any further action will be determined through extradition proceedings and the appropriate courts. The seizure of three forged documents, if confirmed by the court, explains in large part how a person sought internationally can remain undetected during routine identity checks.

The geographical pattern of the case is its most distinctive feature. Kavala, Trikala and Agrinio are hundreds of kilometres apart and fall under different police directorates, complicating the connection of individual incidents: each burglary is recorded locally, and matching the modus operandi requires cross-reference between services. Movement between distant prefectures is a known tactic precisely because it breaks the pattern that would allow faster detection. Meanwhile, residential burglaries peak during summer months, when large parts of the population are away on holiday and homes remain empty for days, with signs like an empty letterbox or permanently closed shutters serving as crude indicators of absence. Prevention in such cases relies mainly on practical measures—limiting visible signs of absence and informal neighbourhood watch—since police coverage in sparsely populated settlements and seasonal holiday areas is necessarily limited during the night.

The case file is expected to be submitted to the competent prosecutor’s office, while investigation continues into any possible involvement of the arrested persons in other similar cases in other parts of the country. The total value of loot from all twelve burglaries has not been announced beyond the sum recovered, nor whether additional persons are being sought. The case’s progress will also depend on handling of the international search component, which follows a separate procedure from the charges attributed in Greece.
