Ileia: ten thefts solved, six men identified

Ten thefts that had taken place at various points across Ileia have been solved after a months-long and systematic investigation by the Ilida Crime Investigation Department, according to a Hellenic Police announcement released on Thursday 20 August 2026. Six men were identified in the course of the case file. Five of them are being sought, while the sixth is already being held in a prison for a different case. The total unlawful gain is estimated by the authorities at more than 25,000 euros, in cash and jewellery. None of those involved has been found guilty and the presumption of innocence applies. The case emerged from cross-checking material that had been gathered in different police reports over a period of months.

The period of activity attributed to the group is placed between September 2025 and 9 October 2025. Of the ten cases, six concern vehicle thefts and four thefts or attempted thefts at a jewellery shop, a warehouse, a supermarket and an OPAP betting agency. According to the police, the method was consistent: the perpetrators are alleged to have moved at night using vehicles they had stolen earlier, so as to make identifying them harder. In one of the incidents they removed an ATM from a supermarket and then set fire to the stolen vehicle on a rural road in the Municipality of Pineios, destroying possible traces. The same pattern, using a stolen vehicle as a tool rather than as loot, recurs in several of the recorded incidents.

The incidents were recorded in Amaliada, Andravida, Lechaina, Nea Manolada, Lappa and Stafidokampos, that is, in a zone covering both urban centres and smaller rural settlements of northwestern Ileia. These are areas where police cover at night is thinner and where the repetition of similar incidents within a few weeks had caused concern among shop owners. In the course of the investigation two cars were seized as means of committing criminal acts. The police describe the case as the result of linking individual incidents that were initially treated as isolated. Connecting them into a single case required cross-checking times, routes and vehicle descriptions from different complaints.

The case file that was drawn up concerns the offences of criminal organisation, aggravated theft and money laundering from criminal activity, and was submitted to the Public Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance of Ileia, at the Parallel Bench of Amaliada. The five men being sought have not been located so far and no timetable has been announced for the case to come to court. The authorities have not made public any details about the age or origin of those identified, nor is it clarified whether arrest warrants have been issued for the five being sought. As the investigation remains open, the linking of further incidents cannot be ruled out, although nothing of the kind has been officially confirmed. Similar cases that are solved, such as the theft of a safe in Faliraki, often conclude months after the acts were committed.
