Evros: four arrests for transporting 18 people

Four foreign nationals were arrested as drivers in separate cases in the regional units of Evros, Kavala and Rodopi, allegedly transporting a total of 18 people without legal documents into the interior of the country. According to a report by Evros24, the individual cases involved four, three and seven people respectively, while the number for one of the four cases is not given separately. The checks were carried out by police authorities in the border zone, and in one of the cases Frontex, the European border and coast guard agency, also assisted. Details of the exact locations of the checks have not been made known.

The picture of four separate cases within a short period, across three neighboring regional units, illustrates how smuggling operates in northeastern Greece. Transport is not carried out with large convoys but with many small vehicles carrying few passengers each time, so that the loss of one vehicle at a checkpoint does not disrupt the whole route. The drivers occupy the lowest and most exposed rung of the chain — they are typically the first to be arrested and rarely know the people who organize and profit from the operation.

For Evros and the surrounding area, this translates into constant operational pressure: checkpoints on the main roads, checks on rural roads, and a continuous presence of forces in a zone where residents, farmers and professional transporters live and move every day. There is also a second dimension not visible in the reports: these routes are often driven in overloaded vehicles at high speed to avoid checks, a condition that has repeatedly led to serious road accidents in northern Greece. Border security and road safety in the area are, in practice, the same issue. Residents of the border zone have lived for years with this dual reality, caught between heightened policing and their everyday farming and professional activity.

Going forward, the four detainees are expected to face charges of illegally transporting third-country nationals, while the people found in the vehicles go through the standard registration and identification procedures. As these are four separate cases, each will follow its own judicial path, and the presumption of innocence applies until a final ruling is issued. It remains an open question whether the investigations will reach beyond the drivers to those who coordinate the transport operations.
