Evros and Rhodope: Four arrests of smugglers

Four arrests were made on August 6-7 in Evros and Rhodope, in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as part of operations against illegal migrant smuggling. The detainees are three foreigners and one Greek national. The arrests were carried out by police from the Rhodope, Alexandroupoli and Orestiada services, in four separate incidents that recorded a total of fifteen irregular migrants.

In Rhodope, a driver was found unloading four migrants in a forested area and was arrested shortly after. In Soufli, Evros, a truck driver transporting five migrants initially failed to comply with a police stop signal, resulting in a pursuit that ended in his arrest. In the third case, a Frontex official assisted in the arrest.

The fourth arrest occurred in the early morning hours of Friday August 7 in a mountainous area of Evros, near Didymoteicho. According to the information provided, the driver lacked a driving license. In all incidents, four vehicles and mobile phones were seized, which will be examined within the investigation for potential connections between the cases.

Cases were filed against the four detainees for violations of migrant legislation. None of the detainees has been convicted and all are presumed innocent pending a final court ruling. Identity details are not disclosed for either the detainees or the migrants found in the vehicles.

Evros remains a key entry point on the country’s land border, with police reporting systematic smuggling incidents toward the interior. Detection operations are based on a combination of patrols, checks on road networks and cooperation with European services. The presence of Frontex personnel in the region is permanent and part of an operational framework agreed with Greece. Smuggling cases are tried by the summary procedure or after regular investigation, depending on the severity of the allegations and whether evidence emerges of participation in organized groups.

It has not been announced whether the four incidents are connected or attributable to an organized network. It is also unclear where the detected migrants were taken, or whether there were minors among them. The authorities have not provided comparative data on the number of smuggler arrests in the region in recent times.

The next steps concern bringing the detainees before the competent prosecutor authorities and examining the seized material. Checks on the road networks of Evros and Rhodope are expected to continue, without specific new operations being announced. No timeline has been given for the completion of investigations in any of the four cases.
