Achaia: three arrests over drug trafficking

Three arrests were made by officers of the Drug Enforcement Department of the Patras Sub-Directorate for the Prosecution and Detection of Crime, as part of a case concerning a criminal organisation trafficking drugs in Achaia. According to Messolonghi Voice and the newspaper Peloponnisos, the group is alleged to have systematically trafficked cocaine and cannabis in the prefecture, with the illegal profit estimated by the authorities at more than 339,000 euros. During the searches, narcotic substances of corresponding value were seized. The identities of those arrested have not been made public and all are presumed innocent until a final court judgment is issued. The charges brought in such cases as a rule include forming and participating in a criminal organisation, drug trafficking and, depending on the findings, money laundering from illegal activities.

The charge of criminal organisation substantially distinguishes the case from individual arrests for trafficking. It requires proof of structured and continuous cooperation between at least three people with the aim of committing felonies, carries heavier sentences and usually rests on a lengthy preliminary investigation with the lifting of communications privacy and surveillance. The calculation of the illegal profit is a crucial element, as it triggers the process of confiscating assets. In criminal organisation cases the file is as a rule referred to an investigating magistrate, with the accused giving their defence statements and a subsequent decision on whether restrictive conditions or pre-trial detention will be imposed.

At the same time, in the same period from 14 to 16 August 2026, three more men were arrested in separate cases in Patras by the Immediate Action Department, with quantities of 4.5 grams of cocaine and 9.7 grams of cannabis seized. These are small-scale cases, but they show that police pressure is being applied simultaneously on two levels, on the trafficking network and on retail distribution. The newspaper Peloponnisos notes, in the same report, staff shortages in the local police services. Working on large and small cases at the same time is a deliberate choice, as retail arrests often feed information into investigations of the higher levels of trafficking.

Patras and the wider Achaia area are a hub for the trafficking of substances because of their position on the axis towards Western Greece and the presence of the port with its connections to Italy. Police activity in the area typically intensifies in the summer months, when traffic increases. Those arrested are being taken before the competent prosecuting authority, while it has not been announced whether other members of the organisation are being sought. More on the Crime page.
