Tinos: What Closes on August 14 and 15

Two separate decisions, one police and one port-related, were published on Tuesday, August 11, and determine what will be in effect in Tinos during the August 15 celebrations. Both apply to the same time period, from 18:00 on August 14 until 14:00 on August 15, and are related to the celebration at the Evangelistria and traffic management at the island’s port.

The police order prohibits the circulation, stopping, and parking of vehicles along the entire length of Megalocharos Avenue, as well as on streets A. Kalavria, Ant. Kallergi, and Geor. Peridon, located around the Evangelistria Church. The measure is in response to the celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God and the commemoration of the torpedoing of the naval cruiser ELLI at Tinos port.

Violators are prosecuted under articles 55 and 112 of law 5209/2025, as stated explicitly in the order. This is a measure taken for reasons of safety and orderly conduct of the celebration, given that Megalocharos Avenue is the main axis connecting the port to the church and concentrates the majority of pedestrian traffic of pilgrims.

Separately, by port decision, a section of the Port Land Zone of Tinos is being closed. The measure affects the waterfront from the “Corsairs” store to the SKLAVENITIS supermarket and applies from 18:00 on August 14 until 14:00 on August 15. Parking is also prohibited on piers P11 and P10. The Municipal Port Fund of Tinos is required to timely place the relevant signs.

For Tinos, August 15 is the period with the highest number of visitors and pilgrims throughout the year. The port functions simultaneously as an entry point and as a gathering place, while the route to the Evangelistria is largely pedestrian. The restrictions mean practically that those arriving by vehicle from Syros or Mykonos need to plan parking differently.

The two decisions do not mention alternative parking areas or special provisions for vehicles of residents and professionals within the closed sections. It is also not clear how emergency vehicles will be served, beyond the general provisions of the law. The two publications presenting the texts fully agree on the hours and limits of the measures.

The measures are lifted at 14:00 on August 15, at which point traffic and parking return to normal status. Until then, signage at the port and on Megalocharos Avenue will determine access to the areas excluded. No additional regulations for the other days around the celebration have been announced, while compliance with the prohibitions will be monitored by the police and port authorities.
