Syros: motorcyclist injured on Foinikas-Galissas road

A road accident in which a young motorcyclist was injured took place on the evening of Sunday 16 August 2026 on the provincial road linking Foinikas with Galissas, in south-western Syros. According to the report by Cyclades24, the rider lost control of the two-wheeler on his own and fell onto the road surface. Two cars were at the spot at the moment of the accident, but were not involved in the collision. The young man was wearing a protective helmet, a detail that according to the same source limited the severity of his injuries. The injury was described as serious, though not life-threatening on the basis of first reports. The motorcycle sustained heavy material damage.

The authorities and an ambulance rushed to the scene, while traffic on that stretch was temporarily regulated until the vehicle was removed. Neither the exact time of the incident nor the details of the rider, who is not named, have been made public. The causes of the crash are being investigated by the Syros Police Station, which is conducting the preliminary inquiry. It is not known whether factors such as gravel on the road surface, poor lighting or excessive speed were present at the spot. In single-vehicle accidents, the preliminary inquiry as a rule examines the condition of the vehicle, braking marks and any testimony from drivers who were at the scene. The presence of the two cars, which were not involved, may provide the authorities with eyewitnesses.

The Foinikas-Galissas road is one of the busiest routes on Syros in the summer, as it links two of the island’s largest coastal settlements with Ermoupoli. It is a provincial road with bends, changes in elevation and limited width at several points, which in August carries many times the traffic it does in winter. Two-wheelers are a basic means of transport for visitors who rent motorcycles and mopeds without being familiar with the local road network, something that increases the risk of losing control at points where the geometry changes sharply. Galissas and Foinikas account for a significant share of Syros’s hotel capacity, with the result that traffic is constant from early morning until late at night. The stretch crosses hilly terrain with no pavements, which narrows the margin for manoeuvre in the event of a sudden obstacle.

The incident adds to a series of road and maritime safety events recorded in the Cyclades during August, at a time when the islands’ population multiplies.
