Syros: end of era for conscripts at Naval Base

The final departure of the last conscript sailors from the Advanced Naval Base in Agathopes on Syros is coming this autumn. The change stems from a regulation put into effect on January 1, 2026, which stopped the enlistment of new conscript soldiers to the Navy and Air Force.

Conscripts now serve exclusively in the Land Army. The last cohort enlisted in the Navy was D ESSO of November 2025, whose service ends this autumn. With their discharge, a cycle lasting decades will close, during which the Syros base was partly staffed by conscripts serving their service on the island. Many of these came from other parts of the country and for several, their stay on Syros was their first contact with the island.

From that point on, the base will be staffed exclusively by professional soldiers and permanent personnel, with expected future reinforcement by additional permanent staff. This change is part of the broader shift of the Greek Armed Forces toward smaller but fully professional units in specific branches.

The second change concerns the way of covering services previously provided by conscripts. Within the “Agenda 2030” reform plan of the Defense Ministry, private company subcontracting support is allowed for work such as guarding and cleaning, which traditionally were covered by unit services from the conscripts themselves. This provision represents one of the most substantial changes in the way units operate, as it transfers to private individuals a portion of daily support.

The change is not isolated. At Navy level, gradual integration of unmanned maritime systems, advanced digital communications, artificial intelligence applications and hybrid propulsion systems is planned. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias recently visited units in the Aegean, including the Naval Base on Syros, as part of presenting the new design and assessing the needs of island facilities.

For Syros, the development has local dimension. The presence of conscripts at the base at Agathopes has been for decades a steady element of the island’s daily life, with economic impact on surrounding businesses and social connection with residents, especially outside the tourist season, when island movement is limited.

The transition to fully professional staff, combined with the prospect of assigning support work to private contractors, is expected to change this picture. How the staffing will ultimately be shaped, and to what extent local labor will be utilized through contracts, will become clear in the coming months.
