Syros: Motorcycle collision at Hermoupoli harbor

A severe collision between two large motorcycles occurred late Friday, 7 August, at Hermoupoli on Syros. The incident took place at Papagos Wharf, near the passenger port, a location with heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic during summer months. Both riders were thrown from their motorcycles by the force of impact, and neither motorcycle carried a passenger.

Two men, aged 54 and 61, were injured. EKAB ambulances arrived at the scene and transported them to Syros General Hospital for initial care and examination. A Coastguard vessel and fire department vehicle also arrived. Firefighters placed special absorbent material on the roadway, as fuel and lubricant had leaked and made the surface slippery.

On Saturday, 8 August morning, due to the severity of his injuries, one of the men was airlifted to Nikaia General Hospital “Agios Panteleimon” in Athens. No further information has been released regarding his health condition. Neither has any announcement been made regarding the second injured man’s status or whether he remains hospitalized on Syros.

The Syros Port Authority is conducting the preliminary investigation into the exact causes of the collision, as the location lies within the port’s land zone. The investigation includes collection of evidence from the scene, examination of the vehicles, and taking of witness statements. To date, no investigation report has been issued and no charges have been brought.

Papagos Wharf is a major axis of Hermoupoli, connecting the port to the city center and experiencing significant traffic, particularly during ship arrivals and departures. In August, traffic multiplies, and a substantial portion of island transportation occurs via motorcycles. This combination has repeatedly concerned local authorities regarding road safety.

It remains unknown what caused the collision, nor whether factors such as speed, visibility, or road conditions contributed to the incident.
