Syros: new opening hours at the cultural venues

New visiting hours come into force from Tuesday 25 August 2026 at the cultural venues of the Municipality of Syros – Ermoupoli, according to an announcement by the municipality’s Department of Culture and Tourism published on Wednesday 19 August by Cyclades24 and naxostimes.gr. The aim, as stated, is to serve residents and visitors better during the tourist season. The changes concern six sites: the Ermoupoli Town Hall, the Apollon Theatre, the Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli, the Markos Vamvakaris Exhibition and the Exhibition of Traditional Crafts in Ano Syros, as well as the Aquarium at Kini.

The Ermoupoli Town Hall, the neoclassical building by Ernst Ziller that is the most photographed building on the island, will receive visitors until 6 September every Monday 08:00-15:00, Tuesday to Friday 08:00-21:30 and on Saturday in two slots, 10:00-14:00 and 18:00-21:30, while on Sunday it will remain closed. From 7 September the hours are reduced to Monday to Friday 08:00-15:00. The Apollon Theatre will operate daily 10:00-14:00 and 18:00-21:00, with the clarification that no visits take place on rehearsal and performance days. The Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli will receive the public Tuesday to Saturday 08:30-14:30, closed on Monday and Sunday.

In Ano Syros, the Markos Vamvakaris Exhibition keeps its summer hours until 6 September, daily 09:30-13:00 and 18:00-21:30, and from 7 September moves to Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:00. The Exhibition of Traditional Crafts operates until 3 September Tuesday to Saturday 09:30-16:30, while the Aquarium at Kini runs until 5 September Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:00. The two sources do not conflict, but the naxostimes.gr account is more concise and does not mention that the Industrial Museum and the Markos Vamvakaris Exhibition close on Monday and Sunday; the full version of the press release was published by Cyclades24, together with the contact numbers of the municipality’s Culture Office and of the individual venues, that is the Apollon Theatre, the Industrial Museum, the Markos Vamvakaris Exhibition and the Aquarium. The release was issued in bilingual form, in Greek and English, as it also addresses the island’s foreign visitors.

The staggering of the dates — 25 August, 3, 5, 6 and 7 September — shows precisely how the tourist season winds down on Syros: first the smaller venues of Ano Syros and Kini close, then the Town Hall returns to purely administrative hours. This summer the island is running an especially packed programme because of the 200 years of Ermoupoli, with events extending to the end of August, such as the ANO Festival. Visitors planning a tour at the end of August or in early September are advised to confirm the hours before setting out, as the dates of the changes differ from venue to venue.
