Syros: lifeguard saved 16-year-old at Vari

The rapid intervention of the lifeguard on duty at Vari beach on Syros describes the report for an incident that occurred on Tuesday 11 August afternoon, around 17:45. A 16-year-old minor was injured when she fell from the dock of the beach, at an hour with large attendance of swimmers, when the beach is at its fullest capacity.

The lifeguard, a member of the Panhellenic Rescue School, immediately perceived the incident and approached her with a rescue board. This is a tool that allows stabilization of the injured in water without abrupt movements, something critical when there is suspicion of injury from a fall from height.

Critical, according to the description, was the decision to immobilize the minor’s neck with a cervical collar before any movement. This maneuver aims to prevent worsening of possible spinal injury, which in falls in shallow water may not be apparent in initial assessment.

With the assistance of a swimmer who rushed to help, the 16-year-old was transported ashore and handed to an EKAS ambulance crew. She maintained consciousness, but was in shock condition. The report does not provide further details on her health status after transfer to the hospital. According to the procedure followed in such incidents, the minor was subjected to imaging examination to rule out injury.

This is not the first incident in which the same lifeguard intervenes at the specific beach. In July she contributed to the rescue of a father with four small children at the same location, an incident that also had a good outcome thanks to timely danger perception from the lifeguard observation position. The presence of trained staff at specific hours of the day proves, in these cases, critical for the outcome.

Vari is one of the busiest beaches of Syros during summer months, with many families and minor swimmers. The dock, used for mooring small vessels, is a point where young people often gather for dives, despite the slipperiness of surfaces and uneven water depth at its base, elements that increase risk.

The incident highlights the importance of organized lifeguard coverage on Cyclades beaches, a question that returns each summer as visitation increases. On islands, where the distance to the nearest hospital can be significant and transfer requires time, initial actions at the accident site often determine the outcome.
