Syros: lifeguards in Azolimnos and Foinika

Lifeguard coverage on the beaches of Azolimnos and Foinika, beyond those officially designated as crowded, will be ensured by the Municipal Port Fund of Syros for July and August 2027. The Committee for the Classification of Crowded Beaches of Syros, which was established and held meetings in recent days, designated the beaches of Kinios, Galissa, Agathopes, and Varis as crowded. The president of the Port Fund and Deputy Mayor for Tourism Yiannis Voutsinos announced that the fund has committed to covering both additional beaches, which do not fall into the mandatory category. Azolimnos and Foinika are two of the most densely populated coastal settlements on the island.

The designation of a beach as crowded is not a typical procedure: it activates a legal requirement for placement of a lifeguard station, hiring a certified lifeguard, rescue equipment, and specific coverage hours during the swimming season. The committee is composed of representatives from the harbor authority, the municipality, and the responsible management body, and evaluates criteria such as bather traffic, accessibility, and seabed characteristics. Beaches that do not meet the criteria remain outside the requirement, which is why the voluntary extension of coverage to Azolimnos and Foinika represents additional expense for the fund. In practice, the lifeguard does not function only as a rescuer but also as a prevention mechanism, as they identify dangerous currents, remove swimmers from areas with vessels, and promptly call emergency services.

The importance of coverage became apparent earlier in August on Syros itself, when a lifeguard rescued a sixteen-year-old from the sea at Varis, as TodayGrid documented in the report «Syros: lifeguard saved 16-year-old at Varis». During the same period, several deaths of swimmers were recorded in the Southern Aegean islands and Crete, with most incidents occurring with older adults at unmonitored beaches. Lifeguard coverage thus remains one of the few measures with immediately measurable results. The two additional beaches primarily serve permanent residents and families, a population that remains on the island outside the tourist season.

The timing of the announcement is explained by how the process works: the beach designations and related budget are determined in the previous year, so the contests for awarding lifeguard coverage are completed before the start of the swimming season. Delays in the process have led in the past to beaches without lifeguards in June or even July.
