Syros: measures at Foinikas for the Kakavia Night

A section of the seafront road at Foinikas on Syros will remain closed to vehicles on Friday 21 August 2026, from 20:00 until midnight, according to an announcement by the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupoli. The traffic ban applies, as the Municipality states, to the section “from the level of the Brazzera rooms to the junction towards the fishing shelter” and is imposed for the holding of the “Kakavia Night”. Only buses are exempt from the measure and will be able to pass as normal; for every other category of vehicle, passage is prohibited throughout the four hours. The ban does not cover the whole seafront axis of the settlement, but the specific section defined in the announcement, with a clear start and end point.

The measure is not a stand-alone decision of the Municipality: it rests on decision no. 2501/10/817-a’/09-08-2026 of the Cyclades Police Directorate, which is also the legal basis of the ban. A specific diversion is provided for to keep traffic moving: journeys towards Posidonia and back will be made via Kriou Street. In its announcement the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupoli asks for the understanding of citizens, residents and drivers for any disruption to their journeys during the evening hours. The citing of the police decision with its full protocol number shows that the measure was issued in a planned way, almost two weeks before the date it takes effect, and not as a last-minute emergency arrangement.

Foinikas and neighbouring Posidonia account for a significant share of summer traffic in southern Syros, with the seafront road serving as the main access route to beaches, accommodation and eating places. Temporarily handing over a section of it to an event means that journeys to and from the area will be made via an alternative route for four hours. Similar measures have been applied elsewhere on the island, such as the traffic measures in Ermoupoli for the White Night, and are standard practice for events in heavily used public spaces. The same applies to the island’s cultural events, where municipal services adjust access and opening hours, as in the case of the new opening hours at cultural venues.

One substantive gap remains: the announcement does not publish a start time for the “Kakavia Night”, nor a detailed programme or the name of the body organising it. The only certain timeframe that has been made public is that of the traffic measure, that is, from 20:00 until midnight on Friday 21 August 2026. Anyone planning to travel to Foinikas that evening will have to allow for the diversion via Kriou Street and keep up with announcements from the Municipality and the Police for any changes. Nor has it been announced whether additional parking space is being provided for visitors. Without a published programme, residents and visitors know that the road will be closed, but not what exactly will be taking place on it and by whom.
