Syros: Beach Showers Close During Peak Season

A temporary suspension of beach shower operations has been decided by the Municipality of Syros-Hermoupolis, announced on Monday, August 10. The measure applies from August 10, 2026, and is linked to the pressure placed on the island’s water supply network during the peak of the tourist season. The municipality did not specify how long the suspension would last nor announced any additional water consumption restrictions.

According to the announcement, the decision is due to a combination of two factors: increased demand during the tourist season and a technical problem that occurred at the desalination unit. The Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Syros is performing continuous interventions and adjustments to the network, while its telephone center operates on a twenty-four-hour basis to serve consumers and record malfunctions.

The municipal authorities responded to an invitation from the water company for a joint meeting of the company’s Board of Directors with the heads of municipal political groups, so that the issue could be addressed collectively. In parallel, the municipality is calling for prudent water use, with particular reference to professionals, as consumption in accommodation and catering establishments increases significantly in August.

During the same period, residents of the Agios Sebastianos area in Upper Syros are collecting signatures to be submitted to the Syros Water Company. They report that the water reaching their homes runs red and has caused damage to household appliances, including washing machines. They state that they are prepared to resort to judicial authorities for compensation of damages.

For Syros, which is the administrative center of the Cyclades and concentrates a permanent population, public services, and tourist traffic, water adequacy has a dual dimension. Dependence on desalination means that a technical failure translates directly into restrictions. The issue of water supply at the height of summer concerns other islands as well, such as Paros and Mykonos.

No response from the water company has been published regarding the residents’ complaint about the water discoloration, nor has it been clarified whether the phenomenon is connected to the desalination unit’s technical problem or to the distribution network. It also remains unclear when the unit will be fully restored and when the showers at the island’s beaches will resume operations.

The municipality has not announced a date for the resumption of shower operations, which depends on the restoration of the desalination unit and the decrease in demand after the end of peak season. In the meantime, residents of Agios Sebastianos continue collecting signatures, while the water company maintains the twenty-four-hour telephone center for reporting faults and problems.
